Imagine being forced to become a nun in the 16th century..

La Monica (“The Nun”) was a popular song based on the lament of a young woman who is forced by her parents to enter a convent, even though she doesn’t want to become a nun.

The melody travelled all across Europe and inspired countless composers, including Philipp Friedrich Böddecker, whose Sonata sopra La Monica is one of the earliest surviving works for bassoon.
